Simultaneously inspiring awe, fear, and wonder, western landscapes provide the canvas on which the western mythos is painted.
My work can be divided into two main categories. The first looks at the idea of the cowboy. Through both print and graphite, I try to portray the cowboy as a stoic, solitary figure. He is self-assured and confident, but there is a loneliness about him that creates a sense of isolation. There is a constant clash between the ideals he is supposed to live up to and the fear that if he does so successfully, he’ll be left alone in his success. However, he is addicted to the journey and the adventure of it all, which is what keeps him in the race. The second category of my work this year looks at landscapes and the part they play in adding to the western myth. Like the cowboy, these works deal in isolation and adventure. They can make the inhabitant feel like the least significant individual on the planet as he or she stares up at the endless sky or looks around at the dry plains and towering mountains.
