“I want to show the audience that art is not just what appears on the surface and how multiple meanings can arise from a single piece of art.”
The overarching goal of my exploration is to question the relationship between the subject and background of the painting while also going through the process of expressive mark making and emphasis. Placing an object, whether a building or glass, into an environment that does not completely make sense creates interest into a painting that requires thought and interpretation. I want to show the audience that art is not just what appears on the surface and how multiple meanings can arise from a single piece of art. I am fascinated in portraying architecture and objects with contrasting textures and layers. As I work through my investigation, I became more comfortable using various tools like sandpaper in order to achieve the complex layering of the background patterns with oil and acrylic paint. I believe that specific connections made throughout a painting can lead to individual interpretations, those of which I wish to make in my art.
